Eger

Tour description:

Departure in the morning to Eger, which is situated in Northern Hungary and is known for its history, red wines, thermal baths, historical buildings (including the northernmost Turkish minaret).

The Castle of Eger played an important role in Hungarian history and was attacked by the Turkish in the 16th century but the 2000 inhabitants led by István Dobó fought back the Turkish army of 80000.
After arrival, guests visit the famous castle of Eger including a walk in the Casamates under the castle. Then they continue with a city walk, with a visit in the Baroque Style Cathedral.
After the walking tour, transfer to the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, which was named after Hungary's patron saint, where the clients get a traditional Hungarian lunch (3 course, coffee, mineral water, 2 gl of wine). The lunch is followed by a visit in the afternoon in the Gál Tibor
Labirintus Winery, where they can taste the famous wines of Eger (especially the Bull's Blood). The cellar system has altogether 16 cellarbranches, on 3000 squaremeter, 6000 hectolitres capacity; the system was created by opening these cellars together; and as they were originally individually made, today they make up a labyrinth of cellars.

Following some free time, the coach departes back to Budapest and arrives after cca 2 hours drive, to the hotel.

Eger Castle:

The medieval castle on a small hill overlooking the town has been the site of numerous historical events. The original buildings included a cathedral and the Bishop's Palace dating from the 13th century; the castle was later fortified, the walls providing the cover for the determined defence against the Turks by a small and outnumbered army in 1552.

Eger Cathedral:

One of the biggest churches of Hungary, the Cathedral of Eger was built between 1831 and 36 in classical style. The church is covered by 3 cupolas. The cathedral houses the second biggest organ of Hungary that was built at the end of the XIX. century by Ludwig Moser from Salzburg.

Bikavér Wine House:


The Bikavér Wine House is located in the downtown, in a cosy building. The place is named after the Bikavér (Bull's Blood), but almost every type of wine of the Eger region and wines of the Tokaj region are sold here. The speciality of the place is Bikavér-tasting, where guests can choose from different types of Bikavér.

Egri Korona Wine House:

The Egri Korona Wine House can be found right in the middle of the wine-growing region of Eger, on the way to the hot spring of Egerszalók. The winery, equiped with a unique technology in Hungary, not only produces high quality wines, but - just like the French chateaus or the Australian wineries - has set the aim to organize high-level, professional programs and wine-tastings, as well as to make wine tourism thrive. A restaurant, a wine shop, and, during summertime, an open-air wine terrace is waiting for the guests.
